Green bulletInteractive TBI Life Expectancy

Welcome to the Craig Hospital Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Life Expectancy Website. People often wonder if having a TBI will affect how long they live. This Website uses data collected in a research project, funded by the US Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). People who have had a TBI, and who have received inpatient rehabilitation for it, may use this website to calculate their life expectancy. (Please Note: the information in this website is intended for people with TBI and their families. It is not intended to be used for medical-legal purposes.)

Before going any further please read our articles titled "Survival and TBI:"

If you click on the "Continue" button below, you will have a chance to answer some simple questions that will be used for your own, individualized calculation. However, before you go on, please understand these things:

  1. The calculation that you will get is a statistical estimate, based on the average life expectancy for people with characteristics similar to your own.

  2. The calculations here consider some of the many things that can effect survival. Other things, like family history, how well you take care of yourself, and the risks you take, all have an effect too. These calculations also don't consider diseases or conditions you may have in addition to your TBI. Things like these could very well have an impact on your life expectancy.

  3. These calculations only apply to people who had inpatient rehabilitation for their TBI. That is because the research itself was done with people who had rehabilitation.

After you have answered all of the questions, click on "Generate Years". Your calculation and an information page will then appear. Please be sure and read the information that comes after your calculation.
